The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded $912 million in an American Rescue Plan (ARP) grant to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to help the agency recover from the economic impact of the pandemic.
CTA employs nearly 10,600 workers and provided nearly 200 million trips in 2020. The funds will help the agency support jobs across Chicago and enhance its low-carbon transportation services that transport 8.6 million residents, USDOT officials said in a press release.
The funding is part of more than $30 billion for public transportation included in the American Rescue Plan Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden in March 2021. No local share is required for the grant.
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded more than $57.8 billion in COVID-19 relief funding to date.
“As our nation’s transit systems recover from COVID-19, the American Rescue Plan funds ensure they continue to provide service to the many Americans who depend on transit,” said FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez.
