STB sets more hearing dates for Amtrak Gulf Coast case

The Surface Transportation Board's evidentiary hearing in the Amtrak Gulf Coast case that began last week will continue this and next week, the board announced yesterday.

The hearing began April 4 and continued over three days last week without reaching a conclusion. As a result, the STB called for the hearing to continue today, April 12, as well as April 14, 18 and 19.

Additional hearing time could be scheduled in May should the hearing not conclude by April 19, the STB's decision stated.

The hearings are held virtually via Zoom and can be viewed live on YouTube.

The case involves Amtrak's application that asks the STB to require CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway to allow Amtrak trains to operate on the Class Is' tracks between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. Amtrak has not operated passenger-rail service along the Gulf Coast since before Hurricane Katrina struck the region in 2005.

The Class Is, along with the Alabama State Port Authority and its rail carrier divisions and the Terminal Railway Alabama State Docks, are opposed to Amtrak trains on the route until Amtrak meets certain conditions.
