The Surface Transportation Board yesterday unveiled details for next week's two-day hearing on “urgent issues” related to freight-rail service.

To be held April 26-27 in-person and streamed live on the STB's YouTube channel, the hearing will address recent rail service problems and recovery efforts involving BNSF Railway Co., CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

On April 26, STB members will hear testimony from representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Federal Maritime Commission and several shippers organizations, including the National Grain and Feed Association, American Farm Bureau Federation, American Chemistry Council, the Fertilizer Institute, Cargill and Growth Energy.

In addition, the board will hear from representatives of labor organizations, NS and CSX.

On April 27, the STB will hear more remarks from representatives of shipper organizations, labor unions, BNSF, UP, CN’s U.S. rail operating subsidiaries and Canadian Pacific.

The STB scheduled the hearing after receiving letters from shippers, labor unions and public officials who reported problems with rail service, rail worker shortages and/or employee working conditions. Given the “serious nature of the service issues” reported to the board, it wants information provided at the hearing to inform potential board actions on those problems, STB officials said.

The hearing agenda can be read here.
