The Federal Transit Administration yesterday announced the awarding of $25 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to help agencies restore service reduced during the pandemic, and the availability of $13 million in grant funds for transit-oriented development (TOD) planning.
The $25 million in funding, issued through the FTA's Route Planning Restoration Program, can be used for transit route restoration planning that is designed to increase ridership, reduce travel times and make service adjustments to increase the quality or frequency of transit service for low-income riders and disadvantaged neighborhoods or communities, FTA officials said in a press release.
Transit-rail agencies that received funding included Valley Metro in Phoenix, which received $514,045; the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, $750,000; Bay Area Rapid Transit in San Francisco, $514,045; Metra in Chicago, $500,000; Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, $780,100; New Jersey Transit, $514,045; Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, $514,045; and Utah Transit Authority, $300,000.
Meanwhile, the FTA announced the availability of $13 million in competitive grant funds through the Pilot Program for TOD Planning, which supports comprehensive or site-specific planning projects that improve economic development and ridership, foster multimodal connectivity and accessibility, improve transit access for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, engage the private sector, identify infrastructure needs and enable mixed-use development near transit stations.
Eligible applicants must be an existing FTA recipient. Applications are due July 25.
