FTA awards funds to boost public transit access to health services

The Federal Transit Administration yesterday awarded $8.4 million to 17 projects in 16 states to improve public transportation for underserved groups, with a focus on health and wellness.

The FTA's Innovative Coordinated Access and Mobility Program, which received millions more in funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, increases Americans' access to health care and other critical services.

Some of the grant awards include $100,000 to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to expand and improve the Virginia Transportation Navigator, a one-call, one-click director of public and human service transportation, as well as mobility management and travel training services.

"This program supports statewide and regional strategies to help ensure people who are especially challenged in accessing health care can reach the services they need," said FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez in a press release.
