The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the March 4 derailment of a Norfolk Southern Railway train near Springfield, Ohio.
NTSB investigators arrived at the site on March 5, according to NTSB on Twitter. The derailment caused no fatalities or injuries. No hazardous materials were involved in the incident, in which 28 cars of the 212-car train derailed, according to media reports.
The March 4 incident was the second time an NS train derailed in Ohio. On Feb. 3, an NS train derailed, leading to a massive fire and hazardous chemical leaks. On Feb. 23, the NTSB released preliminary results of its investigation into that derailment.
Meanwhile, NS announced one of its conductors was fatally injured this morning at a Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. property in Cleveland.
"At this time, officials are reporting that the conductor was struck by a dump truck as a Norfolk Southern train was moving through a crossing at the facility," NS officials said in a press release. "We are grieving the loss of our colleague today."
The Class I has been in contact with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, SMART-TD union leadership and Cleveland-Cliffs leadership about the incident, NS officials said.
