The Federal Railroad Administration has issued a safety advisory aimed at preventing weather-related rail accidents and incidents.
Since the start of 2021, 123 rail accidents/incidents caused in whole or part by severe weather conditions or weather events have been reported to the FRA, the administration noted in a press release.
Severe weather conditions and events not only present hazards to rail workers, operations and infrastructure, but also affect customers and communities that rely on rail service to deliver goods, FRA officials said.
To prevent such situations from occurring, the FRA advised railroads review existing policies, procedures and operating rules for predicting, monitoring, communicating and operating during severe weather, according to the advisory.
Railroads also should collaborate in developing best practices for using weather forecasting technology, predictive weather models and weather-related action plans, the notice states.
