BTS: Value of freight transported among NAFTA nations rose in February

In February, the value of trade moved by surface transportation modes between the United States and Canada and Mexico reached $66.5 billion, up 11.8 percent compared with February 2010 data, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). However, total value declined 1.8 percent from January’s level.

By value, 86.4 percent of U.S. trade was transported on land — primarily by truck, rail and pipeline — in February. Railed import value rose 7.2 percent to $7.2 billion and railed export value increased 4.6 percent to $3.7 billion.

The value of freight moved between the United States and Canada via rail, truck and pipeline in February totaled $40 billion, up 10.1 percent vs. February 2010. Railed imports were valued at $4.9 billion, up 7.4 percent, and railed exports were valued at $2 billion, down 0.9 percent, according to BTS data.

The value of freight moved between the United States and Mexico via surface transportation modes in February totaled $26.6 billion, up 14.5 percent year over year. Railed import value rose 6.8 percent to $2.3 billion and railed export value jumped 12.2 percent to $1.7 billion.
