The Federal Railroad Administration recently awarded the city of Birmingham, Alabama, an $8 million grant to fund projects that will help improve grade crossing safety on Norfolk Southern Railway lines.
Awarded through the FRA's Consolidated Rail and Infrastructure Safety and Improvements (CRISI) program, will help alleviate blocked grade crossings and improve rail infrastructure and safety in the Harris Homes Public Housing Community, according to press releases from the city and NS.
The overall project aims to enhance community safety and accessibility in residential areas and schools by minimizing blocked crossings but also improving both freight- and passenger-rail efficiency.
The grant funding — along with $1.5 million from NS and $250,000 each from the cities of Trussville and Birmingham — will be used to address issues at crossings around Birmingham.
The proposed project involves two segments of NS rail line and the development of plans for track, bridge, signal and road realignments to prevent the blockage of roads that lead into and out of Harris homes. Plans include grade separations and the closure of multiple crossings.
