CABT, rail groups ask Congress to oppose looser limits on truck size

The Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT) urged Congress to refrain from loosening truck-size and weight limits when it considers infrastructure legislation this year.

In a letter to Senate and House leaders of transportation committees, CABT officials asked lawmakers to oppose any legislation that would increase maximum truck length or weight limits on federal highways. In addition, the coalition asked that legislation that would exempt individual states or commodities from federal truck-weight or length restrictions also be opposed.

The letter noted the poor and deteriorating condition of the nation's roads and bridges. The American Society of Civil Engineers, in its latest Infrastructure Report Card, graded the nation's roads with a D and bridges with a C.

"As bad as the condition of our roads and bridges is today, the situation could be made worse. Allowing heavier or longer trucks as has been proposed would further deteriorate our highway system," the CABT letter stated.

Organizations signing the letter include the Association of American Railroads, American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, GoRail, the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association, the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association and Railway Supply Institute.

CABT sent the letter as President Biden prepared to unveil his massive jobs and infrastructure plan.
