Canada’s Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez recently announced the launch of new registration requirements and a new client identification database to reduce risks associated with transporting dangerous goods.

These new requirements will provide Transport Canada more current, accurate and complete information about persons or organizations involved in the transportation of hazardous materials. They demonstrate the Canadian government's commitment to promoting public safety, including when dangerous goods are handled or transported in Canada, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

Under the new regulations, which went into effect this week, applicable persons or organizations must provide the database information regarding dangerous goods they are importing, offering for transport, handling or transporting, including sites where hazardous materials are being imported, offered for transport, handled or transported. The information must be updated annually.

After the database has been in place for one year, penalties can be imposed for noncompliance, up to and including criminal prosecution for extreme or repeated infractions.
