On Friday, Congress passed a six-month extension of the Surface, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). If signed into law by President Barack Obama, the extension will fund federal surface transportation programs through March 31, 2012.
The bill, which initially expired on Sept. 30, 2009, now will be extended for the eighth time.
“This is a positive step forward and we urge Congress to begin now to work to pass a long-term, well-funded, multi-modal surface transportation bill,” said American Public Transportation Association President William Millar in a prepared statement.
