The Federal Railroad Administration last week announced the availability of more than $153 million through the Restoration and Enhancement (R&E) Grant Program for eligible projects that establish service on new routes, restore service on routes that used to have intercity passenger operations or enhance service on existing routes.

The R&E program covers expenses up to the first six years of service for newly initiated, restored or enhanced passenger-rail operations. The expenses include operations, such as staffing for train crew members; stations, such as ticket sales, customer information and train dispatching services; train yard operations; routine planned maintenance of equipment and train cleaning; marketing and administrative.

Grant applications are due Sept. 30.

“The R&E Program plays a vital role in bringing world-class passenger rail service to all Americans by improving rider satisfaction and making possible new routes and services that will meet the needs of citizens across the country,” said FRA Administrator Amit Bose.

The announced funding represents the first round of R&E Program funding since the program was greatly increased by the Intercity Passenger Rail Program and Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program, FRA officials said.
