The Federal Railroad Administration today announced the award of $570 million in Railroad Crossing Elimination (RCE) grant program funding to 32 states for 63 projects.
The RCE’s inaugural round of funding will address more than 400 at-grade crossings to make it easier to get around railroad tracks by adding grade separations, closing grade crossings and improving existing crossings, FRA officials said in a press release.
Last year, more than 2,000 crossing collisions occurred in the United States and more than 30,000 reports of blocked crossings were submitted to the FRA’s public complaint portal, they said.
"With these project selections and the many more that are to come, we will save lives and reshape infrastructure in ways that allow individuals to move through their neighborhoods seamlessly and safely," said FRA Administrator Amit Bose.
Among the largest awards are:• $41.8 million to eliminate a crossing on Shelby County Road 52 in Alabama;• $40.5 million to separate a grade crossing to reconnect the Addy Street neighborhood with the downtown and port area in Washougal, Washington;• $36.9 million to create a 14,600-foot sealed corridor along the Houston Belt & Terminal Railroad line in Houston, Texas;• $36 million for a grade separation at State Highway 53 and Pleasant Valley Road in Hauser, Idaho;• $31.2 million for a grade separation roadway over a Union Pacific Railroad line in Dona Ana, New Mexico;• $30 million for the 42nd Street grade separation project in North Dakota;• $27.5 million for a project to replace a crossing with a flyover bridge in Cleveland, Tennessee; • nearly $24 million for a project to eliminate an existing crossing and construct a new grade separation with CSX in Monroe, Michigan;• nearly $18 million to eliminate a crossing at Woodland Road and Northgate Street and build a road overpass over a BNSF Railway Co. line in Olathe, Kansas; and• $16 million to create a grade separation structure, permanently close two existing crossings on Norfolk Southern Railway and Illinois Central Railroad rights-of-way and create pedestrian crossings on Brush College Road in Decatur, Illinois.
