The Federal Transit Administration is awarding $298.6 million in American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds to the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas, (METRO) and $288.2 million in ARP funds to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to aid their COVID-19 pandemic recovery efforts.

"Public transportation has been a lifeline for communities and the American people throughout this pandemic. This funding ... will help protect transit employees from layoffs, keep transit service running and ensure people can get where they need to go," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a news release.

The funding is part of more than $30 billion allocated for public transportation in the American Rescue Plan Act, which President Biden signed into law on March 11. The federal government has allocated $26.6 billion for urban and rural areas, tribal governments, and enhanced mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

ARP also includes $2.2 billion for additional transit pandemic-associated needs that will be awarded later this year. No local share is required for the funding.
