The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is soliciting public comments on a proposed rule that covers safety certification training requirements of people who oversee the safety of public transportation systems. The rule, which would incorporate current interim certification training provisions as the initial regulatory requirements, would enhance the technical proficiency of people directly responsible for safety oversight of public transit systems and the state personnel conducting safety audits and examinations of rail transportation systems, the FTA announced late last week. The proposed rule would require State Safety Oversight (SSO) agencies and transit-rail operators to certify compliance each year as a condition for receiving FTA financial assistance. The FTA will accept comments on the proposed rule until Feb. 1.
