FTA solicits input on civil rights policies for transit

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has issued a request for information (RFI) from transit agencies, planners and riders on improving equitable access to public transportation.

The agency will use the information to update its requirements and guidance under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which addresses civil rights rules for public transportation, FTA officials said in a press release. The guidance was last updated in 2012.

The RFI seeks suggested improvements on the guidance, such as clarity and the advancement of equity, as well as implementation of rider conduct policies, service and fair equity and other aspects of public transportation. Comments are due Dec. 3 online or by mail.

"FTA hopes to encourage transformative change and ensure a stronger commitment to equity throughout the transit industry," the press release stated. "In addition to transit agencies and transit industry organizations, FTA wants to hear from riders, advocacy groups and stakeholders, particularly from underserved communities."
