House transportation committee hearing to examine federal role in infrastructure

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will hold a hearing Feb. 13 on the "federal role in America's infrastructure."

The hearing — the committee's first of the 113th Congress — will help inform the panel's work and highlight the federal role in strengthening the nation's infrastructure, said Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), the committee's chairman, in a prepared statement.

"Transportation and infrastructure have long been recognized as federal responsibilities shared with the states," he said. "Understanding the federal role in financing, building and maintaining an efficient system of infrastructure is critical to ensuring U.S. economic growth and global competitiveness."

The committee's agenda this session will include reauthorizing passenger-rail safety and reform legislation, and preparing the next surface transportation reauthorization measure.

Invited to testify at the hearing are U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas Donohue; Building America's Future Co-Chairman and former Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell; and Laborers International Union of North America General President Terry O'Sullivan.
