Metra’s website recently notified riders that federal legislation was set to expire yesterday that impacts the amount of pre-tax dollars transit riders are allowed to set aside to pay for public transportation costs.

Congress recently recessed for the holiday break without renewing the pre-tax commuter benefit. Legislation that temporarily established parity between parking and transit/vanpool benefits at $230 per month per commuter was extended under the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act through 2011, according to the American Public Transportation Association.

The benefit reverted to $125 per month when the provision expired at year’s end, while the parking benefit increased to $240.
