The National Transportation Safety Board yesterday published an update for its ongoing investigation into the cargo ship Dali’s crash that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge near the Port of Baltimore in March.
In the update, the board reported it has finished in-person interviews with crew members and onboard testing of electrical systems. Documentation of the damage to the vessel structure is ongoing.
On the day of the collision, “electrical breakers HR1 and LR1 unexpectedly opened when the vessel was three ship lengths from the Key Bridge, causing the first blackout (loss of electrical power) to all shipboard lighting and most equipment,” the NTSB said.
While examining and testing the vessel’s electrical power distribution system and control circuitry, NTSB investigators, in coordination with vessel crew and parties to the investigation, noted an interruption in the control circuit for HR1’s undervoltage release.
The board also said that no conclusions should yet be drawn about the crash’s probable cause, as they are continuing to examine the ship’s power distribution system and all aspects of the accident. Meanwhile, four commercial tugboats yesterday escorted the Dali out of area for the first time since the crash, according to local news reports.
