Obama expected to nominate Charlotte Mayor Foxx as next transportation secretary

President Obama is expected later today to nominate Anthony Foxx, mayor of Charlotte, N.C., as the next transportation secretary, several national and Charlotte news media outlets reported this morning.

As Charlotte's mayor since 2009, Foxx has overseen several major infrastructure projects in the city. He rose to national prominence after bringing the Democratic Party's national convention to Charlotte in 2012.

If approved by the Senate, Foxx will succeed U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who announced earlier this year that he would not serve as transportation secretary in a second Obama term.
