Yesterday, Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff signed a full-funding grant agreement to provide $745.2 million to the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) to construct a 7.3-mile light-rail line between Portland and the Milwaukie suburbs.
The grant clears the way for TriMet to begin building the line, the full cost of which will be $1.49 billion, said Federal Transit Administration (FTA) officials in a prepared statement.
“The Portland-to-Milwaukie light-rail project will make a huge difference in the quality of life of thousands of people in the greater Portland area, connect residents in north Clackamas County to jobs downtown and breathe new life into older neighborhoods like Brooklyn,” said Rogoff.
The line is the region’s sixth Metropolitan Area Express (MAX) construction project and will expand the rail system to 60 miles, according to TriMet. The project will include construction of 10 stations and a bridge over the Willamette River.
