STB allows Savage Tooele to build 11-mile rail line in Utah

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) on April 1 granted Savage Tooele Railroad Co. (STR) the authority to build and operate 11 miles of rail line in Tooele County, Utah, including the rehabilitation of existing track.

The STR rail line will connect to Union Pacific Railroad for tenants of the Lakeview Business Park in Grantsville, Utah, linking supply chains and providing an alternative to truck-only transportation, Savage Tooele officials said in a press release.

STR is one of the only new railroads approved in the United States this year and one of the first railroads owned and operated by a Utah-headquartered company in the state’s history, they said.

The STB’s approval follows an environmental assessment, and the board’s approval is subject to certain environmental mitigations. Savage Toole Railroad will incorporate those mitigations into its design and operations, company officials said.
