STB determines Metra's cost for use of Chicago Union Station

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) earlier this week ruled on Amtrak and Metra's dispute over the Chicago commuter railroad's costs for its use of Amtrak-owned Chicago Union Station.

Metra’s use of the station was previously governed by a contract that expired July 29, 2019. Amtrak and Metra have been unable to reach a new agreement since they began exchanging proposals in spring 2018.

Metra has served the station since 1974. The STB’s decision determines compensation for costs including station operations and maintenance, general and administrative, policing, capital expenses, ground power and inflation.

Now that the STB has ruled, Amtrak "can proceed to complete and sign a lease that is in the best public interest and can continue our work together to safely grow both of our services to the benefit of everyone," Amtrak officials said in a statement.
