STB extends CP-KCS environmental comment period, issues rail rate study

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) Office of Environmental Analysis last week extended the deadline for public comments on the scope of the environmental impact statement for Canadian Pacific's proposed acquisition of Kansas City Southern.

The new deadline is Jan. 3, 2022. Public comments were originally due Dec. 17.

Meanwhile, the STB Office of Economics has published the annual Rail Rate Index Study: 1985-2019, which condenses data and analysis of freight-rail rates into formal reports.

The study provides user-friendly graphs to represent real and nominal levels of revenue per ton-mile and separates rail rates by commodity groups.
