The Surface Transportation Board (STB) yesterday announced details for the upcoming hearing on Amtrak's application to reintroduce passenger-rail service along part of the Gulf Coast.

The hearing will be held in two phases. The first phase will cover public comments and a pre-evidentiary hearing on Feb. 15. The second will feature an evidentiary hearing on March 9.

Both will address Amtrak's request that the STB order CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway to allow Amtrak to operate its trains over the Class Is' lines between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. Amtrak aims to operate two roundtrips daily on the route.

The STB has received numerous comments in response to Amtrak's application, board officials said in a press release.

Anyone wishing to participate in the public comment portion of the hearing must notify the board by Feb. 7.
