Yesterday, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) announced plans to hold a public hearing in Mississippi to review Grenada Railway L.L.C.'s proposal to abandon the southern segment of its line near Grenada, Miss. The board soon will announce the hearing’s date, time and venue.

On Sept. 20, Grenada Railway filed a petition seeking STB permission to abandon 81.3 miles of track between Grenada and Canton, Miss. A week later, the Mississippi Transportation Commission asked the board to hold a public hearing in Grenada to enable interested parties to comment on the abandonment’s merits.

In 2009, CN sold three Mississippi line segments to Grenada Railway and Natchez Railway L.L.C., the non-carrier affiliates of A&K Railroad Materials Inc. and V&S Railway L.L.C., which operates short lines in Kansas and Colorado. The deal included the Grenada line, which runs about 175 miles from the Mississippi/Tennessee border to near Canton.
