STB wraps up environmental analysis for Meridian & Bigbee line acquisitions

The Surface Transportation Board's Office of Environmental Analysis on May 3 issued a final environmental assessment (EA) for CSX's and Canadian Pacific Kansas City's proposed acquisition of Meridian & Bigbee Railroad LLC's (MNBR) rail lines.

CSX has asked the board to approve its request to acquire and operate 93.7 miles of MNBR's line between Burkville and Myrtlewood, Alabama; CPKC seeks board approval to acquire and operate 50.4 miles of the railroad's line between Meridian, Mississippi, and Myrtlewood, Alabama.

The public comment period on the EA ended April 17.

According to CSX and CPKC, the proposed acquisitions would create a direct interchange between the two Class Is at Myrtlewood that would expand shipping options for their intermodal, automotive and other traffic moving between the Southeastern and Southwestern United States or Mexico.

Issuance of the final EA completes the environmental review process. The STB can now issue final decisions on whether to authorize CSX's and CPKC’s requests, according to the EA document, which is accessible here.
