U. S. Rail Holdings late last month filed two new motions with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to stop an out-of-service Nickel Plate Railroad corridor in Indiana from being converted into a recreational trail. U. S. Rail wants to reactivate rail service on the line.
In December 2018, the STB authorized three Notices of Interim Trail Use to the cities of Fishers and Noblesville, and Hamilton County, Indiana, to pursue rail banking on three connected portions of a 37-mile rail line, according to the filed motion.
U. S. Rail’s first motion calls for the board to vacate those notices, arguing that there is a “clear need” for freight and passenger rail service on the line. The filing also notes that U. S. Rail — which is owned by United Rail Inc. — wants to purchase the line and reopen it to rail service.
The company also filed a Motion for Preliminary Injection, which asked the STB to prohibit the Indiana cities and county from removing track or other rail-related material from the line.
