USDOT publishes five-year R&D strategic plan

The U.S. Department of Transportation last week announced the release of its Research, Development and Technology Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2022-2026.

The plan will guide more than $5 billion in research funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, passed by Congress in November 2021, USDOT officials said in a press release.

"In this time of rapid change and experimentation, research must drive the learning necessary for the public sector to keep pace with technological advancement and to adapt to evolving socio-economic needs," said Robert Hampshire, USDOT’s deputy assistant secretary for research and technology and chief science officer.

To develop the plan, department officials used input from a wide range of stakeholders, including from within the department as well as from state, local, tribal and educational institutions; research labs; organized labor; and the private and nonprofit sectors.

In addition, the plan calls for the federal government to address "grand challenges" that aim to achieve zero fatalities related to transportation, resilient supply chains, equitable mobility for all, net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions and intelligent infrastructure.
