The U.S. Department of Transportation today announced the availability of $1.5 billion in funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program for fiscal-year 2023.

The funds help state and local project sponsors complete critical freight and passenger transportation infrastructure projects. Eligibility requirements of RAISE allow project sponsors to obtain funding for projects that are harder to support through other USDOT grant programs.

Grant applications are due Feb. 28, 2023, according to the department’s notice of funding opportunity (NOFO). Half the funding will go to projects in rural areas, and half will go to projects in urban areas. Awards will be announced no later than June 28, 2023.

"After decades of under-investment in America’s infrastructure, we are supporting projects that help people and goods get where they need to go more safely, efficiently and affordably," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a press release.

In 2022, RAISE funded 166 projects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
