The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) would receive $142 billion under President Joe Biden's fiscal-year 2023 budget proposal, the department announced yesterday.
The USDOT budget for that fiscal year, which includes $37 billion in guaranteed advanced appropriations provided under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), would address long-standing maintenance needs of the nation's critical assets, including rail, USDOT officials said yesterday during a media call.
Specifically, the department's budget proposal calls for:• $21.1 billion for the Federal Transit Administration, including funding to build and expand transit service;• $18 billion for the Federal Railroad Administration, which includes funding for Amtrak to reduce its repair backlog and dollars for the new Grade Crossing Elimination program; • $4.45 billion to advance 15 major transit projects in seven states, including $100 million in recommended funding for the Hudson River Tunnel commuter-rail project in the Northeast Corridor;• $1.5 billion for the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grants and the new National Infrastructure Project Assistance (MEGA) Grant program. When added to the $2.5 billion in advanced appropriations under the IIJA, the funding will grow to a total $4 billion; and • $230 million for Port Infrastructure Development Program. When added to $450 million in advanced appropriations, the funding totals $680 million for grants to improve port infrastructure and facilities.
