Talgo/Bombardier to provide high-speed trains, power heads for Spanish railway

The Spanish National Railways (RENFE) recently awarded a $403 million contract to a Bombardier Transportation and Patentes Talgo consortium to provide 18 high-speed trains and 10 high-speed power heads.

Designed to reach a maximum speed of 155 mph, the trains will feature dual-voltage propulsion systems, state-of-the-art signaling systems and variable-gauge bogies. RENFE will use the trains on Spain’s new high-speed lines, as well as the country’s conventional train network. The railway plans to couple the power heads with variable-gauge coaches to form five train sets.

Under its $145 million share of the contract, Bombardier will manufacture the electrical equipment, and propulsion, train-control, communication and exhaustive signaling systems. Talgo will supply the mechanical components.

The trains and power heads are scheduled to be delivered between December 2007 and August 2009.
