HNTB Corp. recently appointed Eugene Skoropowski as passenger-rail services director for the South East Division.

Based in the firm's Lake Mary, Fla., office, he will be responsible for serving the engineering firm's passenger-rail services clients, and providing management and technical services for HNTB's current and future projects in southeastern states.

"HNTB is proud to add Gene to our roster of high-speed rail professionals," said HNTB High Speed Rail Services Chair Peter Gertler in a prepared statement. "His extensive domestic and international experience and talent will add significant value to the services we provide our clients as we continue to lead the industry in bringing high-speed rail to America."

Prior to joining HNTB, Skoropowski served as managing director of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority for 10 years. He previously was director of rail projects for Fluor Corp., where he managed rail construction and operations projects in Los Angeles and Florida, as well as a public-private partnership for TGV high-speed rail services in France. He also led Fluor's 25-year contract to design, build, operate and maintain all track, signals and other related infrastructure for the HSL Zuid Project in the Netherlands.

Skoropowski also served as assistant general manager for Philadelphia's regional transit system for 10 years and chief railroad services officer for Boston's commuter-rail system for five years.

He currently is a member of the American Public Transportation Association's High Speed/Intercity Rail and Legislative committees.
