Today, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced the inaugural  meeting of the Virginia-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact will be held on July 12, 2010, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The meeting will be held in Room 150 at NCDOT headquarters, 1 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, N.C.

At the meeting, Compact members will be sworn in; they’ll also elect officers and adopt procedures to conduct business. The meeting also provides an opportunity for members to “discuss strategies to advance multi-state high-speed rail initiatives,” according to a prepared statement. The primary multi-state high speed rail initiative in question: the Southeast High Speed Rail Project. Public comments currently are being accepted on the Tier II Environmental Impact Statement for this initiative at www.sehsr.org.

The Virginia-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact was authorized by Congress and established through legislation enacted by the Virginia and North Carolina general assemblies.
