Bombardier Transportation, in partnership with AnsaldoBreda, announced today that it received a $2.1 billion contract from Trenitalia (Italian Railways) to supply 50 “very high-speed” V300ZEFIRO trainsets.

The V300ZEFIRO has capacity for 600 passengers and is capable of reaching speeds up to 225 mph.

The trains will provide cross-border service, taking Trenitalia’s riders to other European countries without having to change trains.

Bombardier now has received contracts for a total of 210 trains from the ZEFIRO family, including several orders in China.

“The ZEFIRO is a game changer in this industry as, in addition to high speed, it also offers cost-efficiency, coupled with high capacity capabilities, pleasing aesthetics, reliability, safety, durability and environmentally friendly transportation solutions,” said Stephane Rambaud Measson, president of Bombardier’s passengers division, in a prepared statement.

The production, testing and commissioning of the V300ZEFIRO for Italy will take place in Italy at AnsaldoBreda sites and the Bombardier site in Vado Ligure, Italy.
