Rail News: High-Speed Rail

Connecticut would take returned HSR dollars, Rell says

Add Connecticut to the list of states vying for the federal high-speed dollars that Wisconsin and Ohio might turn away.

Last week, Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell announced she is asking U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for an additional $100 million for a high-speed rail line between New Haven and Hartford, Conn., and Springfield, Mass. The state recently received $120 million in FY2010 transportation appropriations dollars for the project, but had requested $220 million. Rell hopes to make a case to obtain the remainder of its requested funds if other states give up their high-speed dollars.

“The entire region is solidly behind this plan — and Connecticut alone has allocated $282 million in state funds to advance the NHHS line and match federal grants,” she said in a prepared statement.

Connecticut is working to establish high-speed intercity passenger-rail service on the 62-mile corridor within the next five years. The line eventually would extend to Vermont and Montreal.
