Earlier this month, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn sent a letter to Amtrak Chief Executive Officer Joseph Boardman requesting the intercity passenger railroad study the possibility of implementing 110 mph rail service between O’Hare International Airport and Chicago’s Union Station.

The connection between the region’s two largest employment centers would improve regional mobility, Quinn said. The connection would be included as a component of the Midwest Regional Rail System.

Quinn requested that Amtrak complete the study this summer. Amtrak should analyze an implementation schedule, boarding and access at Union Station, station needs at O’Hare, and rail-air ticketing and baggage connections, Quinn said. Amtrak also should discuss the service with track owner Wisconsin Central Railroad (CN), as well as Metra, he added.
