The Vermont Agency of Transportation and New York State Department of Transportation recently launched a study to determine how to establish higher-speed intercity passenger-rail service between the two states.

The study, which will examine an area between Albany/Rensselaer, N.Y., and Rutland, includes: identifying and evaluating reasonable intercity passenger-rail service alternatives; completing federal environmental documentation and reviews; developing preliminary engineering materials; and creating an implementation plan to identify the management approach and financial plan for the proposed service.

Scheduled to be complete by summer 2012, the study is being conducted in cooperation with the Federal Railroad Administration. The study is being funded through a $500,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant; each state is contributing $250,000.
