Last week, the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) board elected Thomas Umberg chairman to succeed Curt Pringle, whose term expired.

Umberg is an attorney with law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips L.L.P., which specializes in federal and state policy and regulatory matters.

The board also elected Tom Richards vice chair and re-elected Lynn Schenk to a second term as vice chair. Board chairmen and vice chairmen are elected for one-year terms and can serve no more than two consecutive terms.

Meanwhile, CHSRA appointed Timothy Buresh Southern California regional director. He will oversee planning efforts for the high-speed rail alignment from south of Bakersfield to San Diego.

Buresh has more than 30 years of experience with civil and public works projects, and has overseen large design-build and design-bid-build projects in California. He also has experience with environmental management for large programs, including environmental mitigation, permitting, regulatory, outreach and contract skills.

Buresh most recently served as vice president of special projects for civil and building construction company Tutor-Perini Corp. He also has served as chief operating officer for the Los Angeles Unified School District, board member for RailWorks Corp., chief engineer for the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority and vice president of civil projects at Jacobs Engineering.
