On July 14, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will present to the public new rail alignments for two segments of the Southeast High Speed Rail (SEHSR) Corridor in Virginia.

In summer 2010, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation held a series of public hearings on a Draft Tier II Environmental Impact Statement for the Richmond, Va.-to-Raleigh, N.C., portion of the SEHSR corridor. In response to the more than 1,800 comments received on the draft environmental report, the agencies have developed new rail alignments for two of the Virginia sections. Maps showing the new designs are featured at www.sehsr.org.

Meanwhile, NCDOT and DRPT will hold project update meetings in Raleigh in late summer to present new rail alignments developed for downtown Raleigh. Pending federal approval, the preferred alternatives will be presented in the Tier II Final Environmental Impact Statement, which is expected to be published in late 2012. The agencies hope the Federal Railroad Administration will issue a Record of Decision in 2013.
