Rail News: High-Speed Rail

Canadian Parliament member urges government to invest in HSR

Yesterday, Canadian Parliament member Brian Masse (Windsor-West) rolled out a “Need for Speed Campaign” that urges the federal government to prioritize higher-speed rail investment in Canada.

In a letter written to Canadian Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Communities Denis Lebel, Masse advises the federal government to convene a working group of stakeholders to advance a project between Chicago and Quebec City. Canada currently has no high- or higher-speed rail networks, and the Windsor-Quebec City corridor could be an ideal high-speed route, according to Masse.

“With the U.S. government investing in higher-speed rail from Chicago to Detroit, we have an enormous opportunity to create a seamless rail connection that is efficient, fast and viable, connecting five international cities and over 30 million people making similar investments in higher-speed rail through this corridor up to Quebec City,” he wrote.

Masse also sent Lebel a copy of a letter his office received from the Michigan Department of Transportation that outlines the rail enhancement projects currently under way along the Chicago-Detroit corridor.

“The letter clearly indicates their interest in developing seamless rail capacity along the corridor through Windsor all the way into the province of Quebec,” he wrote. “Senior U.S. national officials and those in state government have publicly indicated their desire to connect to Canada.”
