California high-speed rail project under GAO review
advertisement
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is in the midst of reviewing California’s high-speed rail project to examine the accuracy of cost, ridership and ticket prices, according to an article posted on McClatchy Newspaper’s Washington Bureau website.
Prompted by Republican congressmen, many of whom hail from California, the report will be the first independent federal inquiry into the project. There is no release date set for the report yet, according to the article.
The GAO will look into: the amount of federal and state money needed to complete the project and operate the system annually; the accuracy of ridership projections being used by state officials to determine cost-effectiveness; and the ticket prices necessary to ensure the system does not have a continued reliance on government subsidies, according to the article.
