The US High Speed Rail Association (USHSR) has named Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) Executive Director Rod Diridon chairman of the association's advisory board.

His appointment will take effect on Dec. 3, during USHSR's High Speed Rail Conference in Los Angeles.

"The presidential election affirmed the public's desire to renew the nation's transportation infrastructure," Diridon said in a prepared statement. "High-speed rail is this nation's most seriously deficient mode of sustainable transport. Led by California, the nation is about to catch up with the rest of the world."

Since 1995, Diridon has served as executive director of MTI, a transportation policy research center created by Congress in 1991. He has chaired more than 100 international, national, state and local programs, most of which have been related to transit and the environment. In 2001 and 2005, Diridon was appointed to the California High-Speed Rail Authority board.
