A committee of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, Canada, is seeking public opinions on the feasibility of establishing a high-speed rail system for Alberta.

The Standing Committee on Alberta's Economic Future will host public meetings in Calgary on Feb. 24, in Red Deer on Feb. 25, and in Edmonton on Feb. 26 to review the proposal, according to a press release issued by the Legislative Assembly.

The committee began reviewing the rail proposal of high-speed rail in November 2013, when it passed a motion that stated: "Given the rapid and continual growth in the population of Alberta, in the interest of maximizing the economic impact of that population growth, the Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future [shall] undertake a study of the feasibility of establishing a high-speed rail transit system to be built for Alberta in phases."

So far, the committee has only obtained feedback from "professional stakeholders" on the idea, officials said.
