The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) and the California Energy Commission have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to explore the latest "green" technology and best practices during the design and construction of the state's high-speed rail system.

The agreement will help facilitate the use of renewable energy and the delivery of "zero-net energy buildings," or facilities for which the total energy used is about equal to the amount of renewable energy created.

"Transportation is the single largest source of the state's greenhouse gas emissions," said California Energy Commission Chairman Robert Weisenmiller in a press release. "California high-speed rail can provide an alternative, greener transportation option for  residents."

In addition, CHSRA has committed to powering its rail system with renewable energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout design and construction, and making energy efficiency a priority in design.
