America 2050 — a national coalition of regional planners, scholars and policy-makers focused on infrastructure, economic development and environmental issues — commended the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) for redistributing $2 billion in high-speed and intercity rail grants to 15 states.

The funds became available earlier this year after Florida Gov. Rick Scott decided not to accept federal stimulus dollars to build a high-speed rail connection between Tampa and Orlando.

“With gas prices on the rise, Americans are looking for alternatives to driving and flying,” said America 2050 Director Petra Todorovich in a prepared statement. “Fifteen states and Amtrak received grant awards that will enable them to expand and improve passenger-rail service, providing a safe and convenient travel option that does not rely on imported oil.”

Todorovich questioned Congress’ recent decision to cut new funding for the remainder of 2011, given the strong interest by 24 states that applied for the funds.

“The fact that the USDOT was only able to fund one-fifth of the $10 billion worth of projects applied for in this round [of grant awards] shows that there is pent-up demand for improved rail service around the country,” she said.
