advertisement
The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) has set a Nov. 1 launch date for Amtrak Downeaster trains to begin serving Freeport and Brunswick, Maine.
The route — which currently runs between Portland, Maine, and Boston — is being extended 30 miles north. NNEPRA has used $38.3 million in federal High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail dollars to upgrade Pan Am Railways' track, rehabilitate 36 crossings and construct two station platforms.
Two of the Downeaster's five daily round trips between Portland and Boston will operate north to Brunswick. The expanded service is expected to add 36,000 more passengers annually.
