Florida High Speed Rail Authority recently awarded a contract to a Bombardier Transportation/Flour Corp. consortium to design, build, operate, maintain and finance the first phase of Florida's high-speed rail system between Tampa and Orlando.

Bombardier will provide its JetTrain technology, which features a non-electric, high-speed vehicle powered by a jet engine. The vehicle is designed to operate at speeds up to 150 mph and meet all American high-speed rail safety standards. Flour will develop infrastructure to support the vehicles.

The system’s first phase is expected to open in 2009.
