Yesterday, California High Speed Rail Authority officials recommended four route alignments for the proposed statewide high-speed rail system.

Based on technical studies, and resource agency and public input, the recommendations include connecting Sacramento and Bakersfield, San Francisco and San Jose, Oakland and San Jose, and Los Angeles and San Diego.

The alignments would connect:

• Los Angeles and San Diego via the Inland Empire route using Union Pacific Railroad’s existing freight corridors;
• San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose via the existing Caltrain Corridor and the Hayward Line to I-880;
• Oakland and San Jose via the Hayward Line;
• Sacramento and Bakersfield via UP and Burlington Northern Santa Fe rights-of-way in the Central Valley;
• Sacramento and Stockton via UP tracks; and
• Stockton and Merced via BNSF tracks.

The authority board plans to vote on the alignments at its December meeting.
